STATEMENT ON MAYOR DE BLASIO’S RENEWAL SCHOOLS ANNOUNCEMENT
#DontStealPossible DontStealPossible.Org
New York, NY – In response to Mayor de Blasio’s press conference at Boys and Girls High School Tuesday morning, Families for Excellent Schools released this statement:
Jeremiah Kittredge, CEO of Families for Excellent Schools, said:
“New Yorkers have heard this script before. Grouping together failing schools and handing them over to the bureaucracy is a recipe for failure. It failed with Mayor Guiliani’s Chancellor’s District fifteen years ago. It will fail again now.
The truth is that the Mayor’s Renewal Schools program is too small, too timid, and too slow to help any of the 143,000 children trapped in failing schools. Dozens of schools report no activity, the UFT is still blocking additional classroom time, and despite the Mayor’s explicit promises to the contrary, there is no accountability.
The 143,000 students trapped in failing schools deserve better. The state must take over the city’s 91 priority schools immediately.”
Families for Excellent Schools harnesses the power of families to advance policy and political changes that create and sustain excellent schools.
