Parents who are interested in learning more about education reform or may be interested in acquiring the skills to manage grassroots advocacy efforts in their neighborhoods are encouraged to participate in the FES training program.
FES currently offers parents four introductory training pathways.
Pathway |
Description |
Core Pathway |
The Core Pathway provides an overview of education reform in New York City, details the role of parents in working with FES, and prepares parents to speak publically about issues impacting them & their children. Includes a discussion on community engagement dynamics related to ensuring a lasting education reform movement in New York City. |
Chapter Building |
The Chapter Building Pathway guides participants through the process of generating buy-in into a proposed action/campaign and mobilizing the broader community in support of education reform. FES supports emerging leaders in learning the skills to lead their chapters. |
Public Speaking & Community Engagement |
The Public Speaking & Community Engagement Pathway provides an overview of the rationale behind lobby visits with elected officials. It guides participants through requesting and preparing for meetings with elected officials. Emphasis is placed on preparing participants to lead discussions with stakeholders on issues related to education and education reform in their communities. |
Field Canvassing |
The Field Canvassing Pathway provides an overview of successful canvassing practices and prepares parents to participate in field canvassing campaigns. The second session pairs participants with an experienced canvasser to give them on the ground support as they work to develop and hone their skills as canvassers. |
