STATEMENT ON MAYOR DE BLASIO’S EVENT AT AUTOMOTIVE HIGH SCHOOL
#DontStealPossible DontStealPossible.org
New York, NY – In anticipation of Mayor de Blasio’s press conference at Automotive High School Wednesday afternoon, Families for Excellent Schools released this statement:
Jeremiah Kittredge, CEO of Families for Excellent Schools:
“If Mayor de Blasio wants to tout progress his schools have made under the Renewal Schools program, he should not stage his events at ‘Out of Time’ schools and mislead New Yorkers.
Boys and Girls and Automotive High Schools are seeing most of their reforms because they are deemed ‘Out of Time’ by the state–not because they are Renewal Schools. Similarly, in Chancellor Fariña’s visit to P.S. 123 on Monday, many of the changes highlighted were not a result of Mayor de Blasio’s Renewal Schools program, but due to a federal School Improvement Grant.
These may be distinctions lost in the politics of the de Blasio administration, but they are not lost on the thousands of kids still trapped in New York City’s failing schools. Mayor de Blasio should instead use tomorrow to explain why his claims of ‘success’ about his Renewal Schools program do not match the reported realities at these schools.”
Families for Excellent Schools harnesses the power of families to advance policy and political changes that create and sustain excellent schools.
